Does home insurance cover hail and wind damage?

Most home insurance policies include damage caused by hail and wind. If you have a comprehensive home insurance policy, you simply need to look at the exclusions, to see if hail or wind is excluded. If not, they’re covered. If you have a named perils policy, you’ll need to check the list of perils (or loss types) insured. If it’s not listed, it’s not covered.

At Square One, our home insurance policies automatically cover damage caused by hail and wind. No paying extra. In fact, you get one of the most comprehensive policies with us.

What does hail and wind damage insurance cover?

Hail and wind damage to your home is covered on most policies. But there are often some conditions.

For instance, if your roof is damaged by hail, or shingles blow off in a windstorm, you may not be paid the full cost to replace it if it was fairly close to its life expectancy. If wear and tear was partially responsible for the roof being susceptible to damage, depreciation may be applied to your settlement. Any damage that is a result of regular wear and tear is not covered by insurance.

Or, if a windstorm knocks over a tree, and it falls onto your house, the policy will often cover the damage to your home, but it will not pay to remove or replace the tree. Damage to radio antennae and satellite dishes is also commonly excluded if the damage is caused by wind or hail.

Mobile or manufactured homes often will not be covered for certain types of hail damage. If you live in a mobile or manufactured home, have your insurance provider review your coverage with you, so you know what to expect if you suffer a loss.

Home insurance wordings are not always the easiest to read or understand, so to find out exactly what you’re insured for, you may need to consult your insurance provider.

How much does hail and wind damage insurance cost?

When covered by a home insurance policy, the cost for hail and wind insurance is built into the base premium. You likely won’t see a separate charge for this coverage.

Hail and wind damage coverage is included in all home insurance policies offered by Square One. No paying extra.

What is the deductible for hail and wind damage?
